Nominate your favorite game to The World Video Game Hall of Fame

The Strong Museum of Play in Rochester New York launched the World Video Game Hall of Fame earlier this year and they need the gaming communities help to find the first games to be added to the Hall of Fame. You can help by nominating your favorite game.

But let me take a step back and explain why The Strong started the World Video Game Hall of Fame.  The Strong Museum of Play is the only collections-based museum in the world devoted solely to play. They have a very large collection of toys and traditional games, and in 2009 they undertook the huge task of collecting and archiving video games and that is when the International Center for the History of Electronic Games® (ICHEG) began. ICHEG collects, studies, and interprets video games, other electronic games, and related materials and the ways in which electronic games are changing how people play, learn, and connect with each other, including across boundaries of culture and geography.

Since 2009 ICHEG has amassed a huge collection of game-related historical materials and is one of the largest and most comprehensive public assemblage in the United States and one of the largest in the world. They have over 55,000 items in their collection includes games and the platforms on which they are played, game packaging and advertising, game-related publications, game-inspired consumer products and other items that illustrate the impact of electronic games on people’s lives, and personal and business papers of key individuals and companies in the electronic game industry.

As the industry grows the necessity for game preservation grows larger, and even though there may be thousands of collectors with a massive collection, we must wonder how does that help the preservation efforts? ICHEG looks to be that central hub of preservation and research for the history of games. They have equipment that can support the old systems, they have equipment to not only capture the physical aspects of a video game from box arts and manuals but actually capture gameplay footage in a digital format. They not only obtain items, they research and preserve as much information as possible in both a physical and digital format.

ICHEG has grown to the point where The Strong Museum of Play is able to start the World Video Game Hall of Fame. Which is a fantastic step forward in the preservation of video games. It is also where you can help express your opinion of what deserves to be in the hall of fame. Visit the nomination page to fill out the form and let us know what game you think deserves to be in the hall of fame.
